2025 - Travels in the Eastern Caribbean, Year 14

Trinidad - January

The new year found me still in Trinidad. 41 months into my long visit due to medical issues and Covid-19.

Guests arrive for New Years

Old friends, escaping the cold of the north, traveled to Trinidad to see what life aboard a sail boat was like.

Trip to the Caroni Swamp - January

After a too long layoff from nature photography, my guests prompted me to head off to the Caroni Swamp once again. Even though the weather forecast was poor, the weather cooperated and we had a lovely afternoon. The tide was in so the flamingos were elsewhere. It was also nesting season so the number of Scarlet Ibus were down.

Trip to the ASA Wright Nature Center

I had not visited the ASA Wright Nature Center since before Covid. The hospitality end of the center is now under new management. I was a litle reluctant to visit as I had heard rumors of the changes. Like many rumors some were true others were false. The facilities are much more upscale than before. However, the changes to the observation deck were a disappointment. Much of the planting around the deck is gone and the birds are farther away. You no longer feel immersed in the nature.

The visit was great overall and I got to see many of my old frends, both human and bird.

Trip to the Pitch Lake

The pitch lake is always a fun trip. Having done the trip several times, i was more interested in the birding the marshs aroumd the lake. On the way back we stopped at the Temple by the Sea. The weather was grand.

Trip to Virginia - April

I had not been back to Western Virginia in quite some time. Great catching up with friends and visiting VMI

Trip to Asa Wright Nature Center

Asa Wright Nature Center is one of my favorate places for photography. It was also my birthday. So I did a solo trip to the Center. The summer is there slow season, so I had the place mostly to my self. The disadvantage of a day trip is you arrive too late for the early morning birds, but leave to early for the evening ones. None the less, I enjoyed the trip.

Trip with Roger Neckles to the Northern Range

Roger is a fantastic guide. On this trip we set out to view birds around the radio tower on the road from Arima across the mountains to Blanchisseuse. Finding few birds we visited one of the Asa Wright remote sites. There we found many hummingbirds. The feeders were close at hand and we were able to view a young hummingbird chick on his first trip away from his nest.

Trinidad - August

Trip to the Asa Wright Nature Center

This was my third trip to the center this year. As always i enjoyed my trip.

Sad news - not long after my return, my computer died. While i was able to get a replacement, it was not able to edit photos. So my photography ended for the year. This past January i was able to replace my computer and thus continue my photography.
